Do you ever feel drained, disconnected, or overwhelmed by how serious life can get? I’ve felt that way too. But over the years, I discovered a simple, profound way to find my way back to a more vibrant and connected state of being. I created a framework I call “The Three Ls.” These three elements—Love, Laughter, and Learning—are the cornerstones of a more connected and joyful life, helping me appreciate the beauty in every moment.

1. Love Begins with You

My first principle is that true, meaningful love is foundational, and it must begin with how I treat myself. This isn’t about grand gestures, but about the daily practice of self-love. Simple things like speaking kindly to myself, saying “a simple I love you” to my reflection, or making time for a quiet moment with a cup of tea or a good book.

For many years, I put everyone else’s needs before my own, believing that was the definition of love. Over time, this left me feeling completely drained and disconnected from my own spirit. My big realization was that to truly give to others, I first had to fill my own cup.

when I fill my own cup I have so much more love to share with others

This insight is so powerful because it reframes self-care not as a selfish luxury, but as the foundational work of having a cup of tea or speaking kindly to my reflection, ensuring I have enough to give to others.

2. Laughter Is My Light

My second principle is that laughter is essential for keeping my spirit bright, especially when I’m navigating difficult times. It’s my reminder to find joy in small, everyday moments and to release the stress that can weigh me down. I encourage myself to make space for laughter daily—whether that means watching a funny video or sharing a joke with someone I love.

I remember a time when I felt a heavy weight on my chest and couldn’t lift my own spirits. One day, my grandchildren did something so silly that it made me “laugh until I cry.” That spontaneous moment provided profound relief and healing.

that moment reminded me how healing laughter can be. It was like a weight lifted off my chest and I realized that even in hard times there's always room for Joy.

This experience highlights laughter as a simple, accessible tool for building resilience. It helps me keep things in perspective and reminds me that even in my hardest moments, there is always room for light.

3. Learning Is My Lifelong Growth

My final principle is that learning is a never-ending journey of growth and self-discovery that keeps me curious and engaged with life. Learning is about staying open to new experiences—reading a book, watching a documentary, or having a deep conversation.

I used to think that learning ended once school was over. It wasn’t until I decided to take up painting a few years ago that I rediscovered the joy of being a beginner. Through this new hobby, I learned about creativity, self-expression, and the importance of embracing imperfection.

we're never too old to learn something new and in the process we often discover more about ourselves than we ever imagined.

This is a beautiful reminder of the power of lifelong curiosity. We have the opportunity to discover new parts of ourselves at any age, simply by staying open to learning.

Together, my Three Ls create a balanced and beautiful way of living. Love keeps me grounded in compassion, Laughter keeps my spirit light, and Learning ensures I am always growing. By consciously weaving these elements into my days, I can build a life that is both joyful and deeply fulfilling.

So I’d love to ask you gently:
Which of the Three Ls—love, laughter, or learning—is shining brightest in your life right now? And what’s one small way you could invite more of the others in this week?
